A monster created by a scientist wreaks destruction. A black cat exacts revenge for a forgotten murder. A curse is cast on all those who enter a crumbling house. Famous versions of each of these Gothic narratives exist in both Anglophone and Japanese cultures.
A symposium I am organising with Dr. Sarah Olive (University of York) at Nagoya University on Saturday, January 13, 2018 explores these and many other fascinating examples, investigating both the Gothic elements of Japanese culture and the use of the Gothic as a frame for Anglophone understandings and representations of Japan.
